How to Stop a Migraine

The Migraine Industry

Americans spend close to $17 billion on migraine associated costs every year for things like outpatient services, doctor visits, and diagnostic tests. Treatment usually includes prescription drugs that come with a long list of side effects, are expensive and often don’t give full relief of symptoms.

Here are some painful statistics:

  • Nearly 1 in 4 people in a typical United States household suffers with migraines.
  • Over 10% of the population have migraines on a regular basis.
  • Loss of work days due to migraines cost American businesses more than $13 billion each year.
  • Migraines often run in families. If one parent suffers from migraines, there is a 40% chance children in that family will too. If both parents have migraines, the chance rises to 90%.

How to Stop a Migraine with Food

Migraine Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 8 ozs water (can also use coconut water)
  • 1/2 cup diced pineapple
  • 1/2 cup chopped kale
  • 1 celery stalk
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 of a cucumber
  • 1 tsp fresh ground ginger
  • 3/4 cups Ice

Blend all the ingredients until smooth (I love my Vitamix). There are a ton of health benefits you’ll get with this smoothie. Fresh pineapple has been shown to help ease headaches because it contains bromelain, a natural enzyme that has been shown to be a pain killer. It also provides anti-inflammatory properties.

Cucumber is 95% water which helps as many headaches can be a symptom of dehydration. Ginger reduces inflammation and studies have shown it working faster than aspirin or other prescription medications. Leafy greens like kale are also great in the battle against migraines.
